Psychiatric Medication Management

Thoughtful Medication Guidance — Not Medication Overload

Many people come to psychiatric care after frustrating experiences with medication.

You may have been given prescriptions quickly, without much explanation.
You may have been placed on multiple medications at once.

You may find yourself on many medications without knowing what they are supposed to do and how to streamline them if you find you are on too many.

Or you may still be unsure whether medication is even the right step.

Medication can be helpful when used carefully. But more medication is not always better.

At Green Door Vitality & Wellness in downtown Raleigh, I provide psychiatric medication management with an intentional, slower, more thoughtful approach.

As a holistic psychiatrist, I look at the full picture — symptoms, nervous system responses, life stressors, and physical health — before making medication decisions.

When medication is used, the goal is clarity and stability, not complexity.

Situations Where Medication Guidance May Help

People often seek medication management when:

  • They are unsure whether starting medication is the right option
  • Previous medications caused unwanted side effects
  • They are currently taking multiple medications without a clear benefit
  • Anxiety, sleep problems, or mood symptoms are interfering with daily life
  • Trauma-related symptoms are difficult to regulate
  • They want guidance from a psychiatrist who takes time to evaluate the whole picture

Medication can sometimes reduce symptoms enough to make other forms of healing more effective.

The goal is not to override your system — it is to support it.

What Improvement Can Look Like

When medication is used thoughtfully, people often notice:

  • Reduced intensity of anxiety, depression or mood swings
  • A noticeable change in outlook
  • Feeling lighter and more hopeful
  • Improved sleep and waking up rested
  • Greater mental clarity and concentration
  • A steadier baseline from which to engage in therapy or daily life
  • Fewer side effects due to a simplified medication plan

In some cases, people also seek support reducing or simplifying medications they are already taking.

Every treatment plan is individualized and adjusted carefully over time.

My Approach to Medication Management

Psychiatry has increasingly moved toward complex medication combinations.

I practice a more analytic and judicious model.

This means:

  • Starting with careful evaluation before prescribing
  • Avoiding unnecessary medication layering
  • Giving medications adequate time to work before changing them
  • Using the smallest effective dose
  • Not adjusting without an accurate trial

Medication is only one tool.  But it can be greatly helpful if timed right and dosed correctly.

During sessions, acupuncture is incorporated to help regulate the nervous system and reduce symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, or emotional distress.

This allows some people to achieve symptom relief with less medication than they expected.

My training in psychotherapy also informs medication decisions. Understanding emotional patterns, trauma history, and stress physiology helps determine whether medication is necessary — and if so, which option makes the most sense.

What to Expect

Your first appointment is a 60-minute psychiatric evaluation.

During this session, we review:

  • Current symptoms, prioritizing what is most bothersome to you
  • Medical and Psychiatric history
  • Previous medication experiences
  • Sleep, stress, and nervous system patterns

From there we determine whether medication, acupuncture, psychotherapy, or a combination would be most helpful.

Follow-up appointments are typically 60 minutes and include medication review along with acupuncture support for symptom reduction.

Sessions are usually scheduled monthly, depending on treatment needs.

Services are provided in person at Green Door Vitality & Wellness in downtown Raleigh.
